How Much Dryer Vent Cleaning Can You Do Yourself? Ponte Vedra Beach Guide
Ponte Vedra Beach homeowners: the dryer vent upkeep you can do yourself, where DIY stops working and when to call a pro. From $99.

If you live in Ponte Vedra Beach, a few minutes of routine care goes a long way toward keeping your dryer efficient. Professional cleaning still matters, though, because one part of the vent is out of reach.
Start with how the system works
A dryer vent has four parts: the lint screen, the transition hose behind the machine, the duct that runs through the house, and the exterior hood. Homeowners can reach three of them. The fourth, the duct itself, is where most of the trouble starts.
Your part: a 15-minute routine
Lint screen. Clear it every load. That's the top recommendation from the U.S. Fire Administration. If you use dryer sheets, wash the mesh occasionally so the film doesn't block air.
Transition hose. Every few months, unplug the dryer, move it out, disconnect the hose and clear the lint. If the hose is crushed, kinked or made of thin foil or plastic, replace it with what the dryer's manual specifies.
Exterior hood. While a load runs, go outside and check that warm air is pushing the flap open. Clear any lint, leaves or nesting material.
The part that's harder than it looks
Brush kits with flexible rods attach to a drill and can work on a short, straight run. On longer runs or lines with multiple elbows, they have real drawbacks:
- Without suction, lint is often shoved further down the line.
- Rods can get stuck or separate inside the wall.
- You can't confirm the full line is clear.
- Damage hidden in the wall, like a crushed section or loose joint, goes unnoticed.
Close to the ocean, salt air and humidity are hard on exterior vent hoods. Flaps can stiffen or corrode, and damp lint builds up faster inside the line. Larger coastal homes also tend to have longer vent runs, sometimes exiting through the roof.
Red flags that call for a pro
- Clothes coming out damp after a full cycle
- An unusually hot dryer or laundry room
- Any burning smell (stop using the dryer until it's inspected)
- Barely any airflow outside, or a stuck flap
- Lint showing up around the hood or behind the dryer
